After a long COVID delay, HarmoniCollege will return. Our 'professor' will be Sandy Weltman Here is the 'syllabus' of what Sandy will be teaching on Saturday, from 9 to 5. ===================================================== Leaning to Play in “Minor” Positions In this class we will learn how to play minor music (as opposed to major) in five different positions (keys) on one harmonica. We’ll learn to understand when, why and how to choose a particular position for any particular minor song. We’ll also learn a minor song(melody) and a solo in these 5 positions. A Pentatonic Approach For The Harmonica I like to tell my students that if they learn nothing else but the pentatonic and blues scale along with some associated licks and patterns, they will probably be able to jam along very competently on any folk, rock, blues or bluegrass song or jam session that they encounter. In this class we are going to dig into the five note pentatonic scale for the harmonica. We will learn licks, patterns and approaches to jamming with this simple yet profound scale. The Blues Scale Patterns, exercises, and licks will be taught to help assimilate these all important six notes into all of your playing. 12th Position What is it? When and how to use it. Patterns ,licks and exercises to help you get going. We will also learn a swingy version of a harmonica standard using this position. Learning To Play in 1st Position (you’ve got to be kidding… I did that years ago when I first started) Not kidding. We’ll learn way more than you thought possible in this position, including blues, jazz/swing, bluegrass and even some ethnic music. Approaching Jazz and Swing This class will focus on an approach to learning, understanding and playing one of the most crucial components to playing jazz/swing on the harmonica, the 2-5-1 progression. Specifically, 2-5-1 licks and patterns in a few different positions. Overblowing What is it? How to do it? How to use it? …along with assorted overblow licks in assorted positions. ======================================================== It all happens at Heritage Farm, Huntington, WV. The cost is $100. To reserve a spot email jrumbaug@live.marshall.edu Jim Rumbaugh The Harmonica Club of Huntington, WV ================================================================ I am CONFIRMING it’s a go for the NEW North Ohio HarmoniCollege Oct 2nd & 3rd 2020 program So far, it’s a SMALL group, maybe 8 total, but I gave it the go ahead when I learned Charlie Barath had arranged for Chris Sutton to back him up on guitar. My friend the late Ray Ratcliffe once said, “Charlie and Chris are the best I’ve heard since Cephus and Wiggins” I also recruited my duo partner Karen Combs to come and add her guitar and singing to our jam sessions. Danny G and Harmonica Bruce have generously offered their facility to be the Noth Ohio Extension of HarmoniCollege for this year. The location is 21746 N Benton West Rd North Benton, OH 44449, located between Pittsburgh, PA, Akron, and Cleveland, OH. This is the same location where the Ohio State Harmonica Championship took place this year. Our instructor will be Charlie Barath from the Pittsburgh, PA area. Classes will be Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm Friday and Saturday night jam.sessions will be around an open campfire from 7 to 11. .Saturday classes will be held outdoors, weather permitting, or in Harmonica Bruce’s new 4000 square foot barn where we can spread out. This will give us good ventilation. Masks will be encouraged but not mandatory, The cost is $100 for Friday and Saturday for classes and jam sessions or $70 for Saturday classes only. Food will be provided. Some alumni have prepaid, Those payments will be applied to the cost. Any overpayments can remain as credit for spring 2021 or be refunded. Since the Ohio Harmonica Championship at Danny G’s Party in North Benton, OH in July was so successful, we will use the safety techniques used then. Seventy people attended the event and a 2 week follow-up of attendees showed no covid 19 infections in the group. Everyone’s name and temperature will be recorded on Friday night and Saturday morning. We will do a health follow up 10 days after the event. . For the $100 fee, CAMPING is allowed. Dogs are allowed. There is electric hookup available for campers. Danny and Bruce said they have a few bedrooms and couches available if you want one. There is a $60 and a $70 per night motel 15 minutes away. THIS IS ALL CONTINGENT ON RESPONSE. . This is a last minute plan, but a workable plan. If we get enough people interested, it will happen. . You may ask questions and make suggestions. For the intermediate to advanced players I will take them as far as they can handle. 3) You will Learn Eric Clapton's “Hey Hey”. The Harmonica Club to play at The Java Joint
4-7-2011 After April the 12th the club will be wandering to and fro for a few weeks as they try to figure out where they want to be and as they do their civic duty. On April 19th the club will be at The Charles Russell Elementary grade school on Blackburn Ave in Ashland, Ky from 6pm to 8pm as part of the fund raising Blues Night and Spaghetti Dinner. Funds from the dinner will be used to buy harmonicas for the 5th and 6th grade students. They will be taught by their teacher and club member Joanne Reinhard. April 26th from 7pm to 9pm you will find the club at Gino's Pub at 25th street and 5th Ave in Huntington, WV. The following Tuesday May 3rd takes the club to The Huntington Kitchen at 911 3rd Ave. The second Tuesday in May is the 10th, and the beginning of the club's "Night on the Town" performances at Pullman Square from 7pm to 9pm. The club will continue to perform at Pullman square on the 2nd Tuesday of each month through October. Locations of meetings after May 10th will be announced later. 4-2-2011

JAVA JOINT CLOSES IN APRIL  It's been our home since 2001. It's like loosing a member of the family. We will miss Amber and Jason, but when one door shuts, another opens. The Harmonica Club will continue, it will just be different. 3-1-2011 Tony Crozier joined us. It was good to have Tony back. There were 14 of us. We played for 1 and 1/2 hours and went home full of chili and good times. 2-8-2011 Chris Sutton did the opening tune for us. He also confirmed that we will do the WV State Harmonica Championship at The Diamond Teeth Mary Festival on Saturday August 27th. Now it's time to plan and organize the event.  This year the 2009 WV State Harmonica Championship is sponsored by Picnic with the Pops. The Huntington Symphonic Orchestra will perform at Harris Riverfront Park, starting at 8pm. The gates open at 5pm. The Harmonica Club will be doing some pre-show entertainment. Satan and Adam's Aug 2009 tour will not be coming to Huntington, WV due to scheduling problems. Adam Gussow said he may be our way next year as a solo act. I told him if he comes our way, we WILL make something happen. 6-13-2009, The Harmonica Club played for The Cabell Wayne Association of the Blind. Our own harper, Kermit Nance, was honored for 10 years service to the organization. Guest guitarist Chris Sutton filled in for us.  Deak Harp came down from the Chicago area to played the V Club Tuesday April 7th. We all got to talk to Deak, ask a few questions, hear a few stories, and have a good time. C and A harp and play along.go to LESSONS to hear it. 5-25-2008 The Ironton Memorial Day Parade was FINE. Everyone chipped in, so no one person worked too much. We overcame a few technical difficulties and came out with a fine sound for a large audience. We had Brent on Drums, Richard and Bobby on guitars, Tom on Bass. On harp was Dick, Ron, Banjo Jim, Paul, Jane, Joanne, and me. Yes, I stepped on my microphone cord and unplugged myself, and I started a few songs on the wrong note. But we did FINE. When my first pick of a 7 pack of Special 20's were back ordered, I started looking for an alternative. I looked at Lee Oscar and Bushman Delta Frost. I had a poor experience with my first set of Lee Oscars, and I've run into a backorder problem with Bushman, as well as a dissapointing performance with the last reed plates I received from Bushman. John Ball was telling me how happy he was with his Suzuki. Dick King had given me a ProHarp Valved that was impressive. I decided to look into them. Some digging turned up this tid-bit. The Suzuki BluesMaster and the Bushman Delta Frost have interchangeable phosphor-bronze reed plates. The combs are the same too. Many voices say they are the same harp with a different cover. I found a 6 pack for $100 even, including shipping. The keys are A, Bd, C, D, F , G. To me, this was a better line up than the Special 20 pack of ABCDEFG. We NEVER use B and E, and I want a Bd to do the Adam Gussow video lessons. 2-18-2008 We have 2 recordings wrapped up. Go to the PLAY ALONG page (click on the link in the left column). I've been slow the last 30 days due to computer woes, but I have it under control now…… after a reformat and re-install, but the process was helped out by the new 320 gig external drive that now holds the club's recorded tunes. The 120 gig was maxed out. We will meet at The Java Joint January 8th at the usual time, but January 15th marks our first RECORDING SESSION at Richard's house in Barboursville. No instructions on how to get there yet. All I know is, make your way to the 4-H camp …… and the instructions will go from there. Come early, bring a snack, and expect to sit around a lot. Paula is making arrangements and we are working out details. Make plans to meet with this exceptional harp player and teacher. We will start a recording project. Starting in 2008, we will meet the 2nd Tuesday at Richard's house to do a "real" recording. Richard has a 16 track digital studio in his home. We should be able to do anything we want. It was a good drill and refresher. Saturday was The Multi Cultural Festival. The 5 o'clock group sent their regrets, so we were asked to start early, but Paula and I were the only early birds. Paula volunteered to do her own "Shopping at the Walmart Blues". Then as others drifted in, we slowly took form. Ron lead the gang in a tune as I went to get my bass and amp. Then like a steamroller, we started slow and built up steam. Then about the time we got rolling, strong winds threatened a storm and the sound man said, "shut it down". Still, it was a good show. The West Virginia State Harmonica Championship 2007 7-22-2007 Darrell Brown wins 2nd place in Ohio State Harmonica Championship. I was PROUD as 4 members from our club participated in the event. They were Ray, Kermit, Paula, and Darrell. Ray had the hard job of being the first participant. Darrell had the problem of being the last out of a total of 13 players. This year there was more players, variety, and tougher competition all around. Our gang did GOOD. 7-10-2007 Pullman Square was fun. We had a good turnout of harpers and pickers. You'll hear our first attempt at 'The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald". We now have a ship wreck song to add to our train wreck Songs. I guess we should hunt for a car wreck song and an airplane crash song too. The video lessons were on the 1 hole draw and the 3 hole bent. I am VERY happy with the Gussow series of lessons. It's just what I have needed to grow to the next level.
